Dallas Stars captain Jamie Benn has a collapsed lung and will undergo surgery.

General manager Jim Nill said the injury occurred in Tuesday's preseason game against the Minnesota Wild.

Benn, 36, will be re-evaluated in four weeks, Nill said.

The forward has been with Dallas since the Stars selected him in the fifth round of the 2007 NHL Draft.

Last season, he appeared in 80 games and registered 49 points (16 goals, 33 assists).

In 1,192 career games, he has 956 points (399 goals, 557 assists). He won the Art Ross Trophy as the NHL's leading point scorer with 87 in 2014-15 and a gold medal with Canada in the 2014 Sochi Olympics.

In the offseason, he signed a one-year, $1 million contract that includes up to $3 million in bonuses.

The Stars open the regular season on the road on Oct. 9 against the Winnipeg Jets.
